Meditation May Increase Empathy

“Previous brain studies have shown that when a person witnesses someone else in an emotional state—such as disgust or pain—similar activity is seen in both people’s brains. This shows a physiological base for empathy, defined as the ability to understand and share another person’s experience. Now research at the University of Wisconsin has used advanced brain images (fMRI, functional magnetic resonance imaging) to show that compassion meditation—a specific form of Buddhist meditation—may increase the human capacity for empathy.” Find out more here.

Iyengar Yoga for Chronic Low-Back Pain Shows Promising Results

“Low-back pain is a major public health issue in the United States and the main reason why people use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Previous research suggests that yoga, a popular CAM activity, may be beneficial for people with chronic low-back pain; however, many studies have had design flaws. NCCAM-funded researchers at West Virginia University conducted a clinical trial to evaluate the effects of Iyengar yogaIyengar yoga is a popular style of yoga that is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar. It uses props such as blocks, belts, and blankets to help support the body during postures. on chronic low-back pain. Meditation May Reduce Stress in Breast Cancer Patients

The two-year trial included 130 patients at Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, aged 55 and older, randomly assigned to either a transcendental meditation group or to a usual care control group. Quality of life was assessed every six months.” Find out more here.
